Orcas Island
Mary and Will celebrated their love with family and friends on one of the most beautiful places in the San Juan Islands. A long ferry ride from Anacortes drops you off at Orcas and though it isn’t that far from Bellingham – it does have a sense of remoteness. Many natives here in Washington would probably not consider it to be a Destination Wedding, but most people would say that Orcas is quite the destination. Even with a reservation, the wait times for a ferry can be long and getting off the island is another story. Mary and Will made a great choice with Orcas Island. Mary is a Marine Biologist and being surrounded by water is a big part of her life. Will is an artist and set designer for theater and fits in well with the bohemian culture on the island.
“If this van’s a rockin’…”
The Wedding day was an all day event, filled with many memorable moments. The first moment of the day was the van. “If this van’s a rockin’…” well, you might want to put the parking brake on first. Luckily, no one was injured when the van rolled down hill and crashed into a cabin. Try and explain that one to your insurance company. There was plenty of time to explore the island in the morning. To shed the anxiousness, Mary and Will took a kyak paddle after coffee with friends. It never rains on my weddings – never. The clouds parted and the sky was deep blue.
Ceremony
The ceremony was a classic and simple. A few sunflowers, a chuppah, friends, family and a priest. Set on an overlook, almost surrounded by water. Everything was personal and thoughtful. Readings and music were performed by friends and family. Vows were written and added a emotional element. The bride wasn’t the only one crying. The ceremony was over in 20 minutes, but time seemed to stop for the bride, groom and guests as everyone was enjoying the moment. Portraits followed the ceremony and were shot lightning fast. A photographer can’t hold up the reception and the party! Shooting the portraits started with a group of guys mooning us. Again, at every turn there was something to keep you guessing what was next.
Reception
The reception was held in Eastsound at Oddfellow’s Hall. I can’t tell you enough how much this is a great location for a wedding reception. I would be back in a couple years to shoot another wedding here on the island and the bride and groom chose Odd Fellow’s as well. Plenty of room to party, dance and socialize. The personal touches Mary and Will added were amazing. Beautiful tarts were baked by Mar’s sister a professional baker. Will painted the three large murals after flying in from North Carolina. The murals signify meaningful events, friends and love for Mary.
How he did it in a day still stuns me. When Will first saw the wedding photos, he mentioned how the photos and wedding were exactly how he envisioned it in the murals.
Congratulations to Will and Mary and many happy years ahead. Cheers!
